To: CALSAGA members From: William Hodges, Deputy Association Manager Re: CALSAGA quoted in Security Director News Date: March 1, 2007 In the March issue of Security Director News, Association Manager Jeff Flint was quoted in a story about how California is the first state to require Proprietary Security Officers (PSOs) to register with BSIS and complete a background check. One of the messages Jeff conveyed well was that the implementation of SB 194 will continue to strengthen the security industry and provide better protection to the public. There is some concern that the new law has made it more difficult for employers to find qualified officers, especially in the retail and hospitality industries. According to the article, those industries have been the slowest to comply. Nonetheless, it appears that employers are now educating themselves on the requirements mandated by SB 194 and are well aware that BSIS, as well as local law enforcements are out checking for compliance. At the BSIS Advisory hearing on February 7, Chief Paul Johnson indicated that roughly 4,000 PSOs have registered with BSIS since the implementation in September 2006.
