Association Manager Report – March 2010
It was just a few months ago that CALSAGA put in motion a proactive plan for 2010, aimed at building membership, providing more educational opportunities, impacting legislation, creating more membership benefits and ramping up our public relations efforts. I pleased to report that in a short period of time, we have already made significant progress on many of our goals. Our efforts this year will continue to build on our prior achievements in shaping the organization and the security industry now and in the future. This is an exciting time for us – we hope that all of our members share in our enthusiasm! In March, CALSAGA hosted two labor and employment seminars in Sacramento and in Pasadena. A variety of topics were covered including, meal and rest breaks, sexual harassment and discrimination. Attendees were also briefed on pending legislation and regulations that could impact their businesses. Both seminars were well-attended and extremely successful. We thank Barry Bradley, Bradley & Gmelich and Erika Frank, California Chamber of Commerce for delivering a first-rate program. You can read more about the seminars in this newsletter and find out information on our next round of seminars slated for June. As reported in our last eNewsletter, CALSAGA is in the process of expanding our team by hiring a full-time membership coordinator. This person will be responsible for ensuring all members know all the benefits of their membership, and for recruiting new members. Until we get that person in place, I am thrilled that we have added eight new private patrol operator members to CALSAGA since the beginning of the year! Our Training Committee is busy developing a training curriculum for proprietary security officers to comply with the new law that requires in-house security officers to complete sixteen hours of training. These regulations went into effect December 12, 2009. Additionally, the Committee is in the process of reviewing the existing curriculum for contract security officers, with a priority focus on reviewing the mandatory courses first. We will have a better idea on completion of both projects soon, but we envision on re-launching both training curriculums at once as part of a new package. CALSAGA recently sat down with the new BSIS Chief Jeffrey Mason. You can read a full report of our meeting in this newsletter, but we are thrilled to learn that effective March 12, BSIS has been given approval to allocate a certain number of staff members to work on Fridays, with the sole purpose of processing guard card applications. We are hopeful this will help clean up any backlog of applicants waiting to get licensed. Finally, we are making progress on our public relations initiatives – California Security Officer Appreciation Day, Speakers Bureau and Legislator of the Year. We are also gearing up for our first of several region events hosted by each of our Regional Directors starting in April. There will be a lot more information on all of these activities soon, so stay tuned! Thank you for your continued support! Best, Jeff Flint |
