CALSAGA looks at Mall Cop as an Opportunity

In case you haven’t heard, the movie Mall Cop is number one in box office for two straight weekends.  In this comedy, actor Kevin James plays a clichéd mall security guard named Paul Blart, who despite some foibles, becomes a hero after saving the mall from a gang of organized criminals who put the mall under siege.

For those that have viewed the trailer, the movie exploits some negative stereotypes of security guards.  While CALSAGA considered various ways to respond, the Board ultimately decided that the movie was an opportunity to educate the public.  Last week, CALSAGA made contact with Kevin James’ publicist to possibly do a public service announcement (PSA) about the positive role security officers play in today’s society.

The role of a security officer has evolved over the years, especially in California, where standards are the highest in the nation. The Board saw an opportunity in the situation and thought that a PSA would be an excellent way to promote the industry and improve the public perception.

We will update members if we make contact with Mr. James. In the interim, if you would like to view the letter CALSAGA sent, click here.
