CALSAGA news

Association Manager Report – February 2010

2010 is certainly off to a busy start for CALSAGA, and I wanted to take a moment to update you on the many activities and programs your Association is undertaking on behalf of our members and the industry.

You don’t need to be told that labor and employment law is a constant headache for our members, and the threat of a class action lawsuit hangs over the head of any of our members.  To help ensure you have the latest information on how to protect yourself, CALSAGA is holding two labor and employment seminars – March 16 in Sacramento and March 18 in Pasadena.  Your printed invitation is in the mail, but we’ve also got the details for you later in this e-News.  And these are just the first in a series of seminars that CALSAGA will host each quarter of the year.

In addition to these larger seminars, our eight regions and their respective directors have committed to holding less formal get-togethers on a regular basis this year so CALSAGA members and the various regions can get together and share ideas. Look for the first one in your region in April.

CALSAGA will be busy on your behalf, as always, in the State Capitol this year.  Assemblyman Ted Gaines has introduced AB 2128 at our request.  AB 2128 will expand the current requirement – that PPOs offering armed officer services have a minimum liability insurance policy of $500,000 – to all PPOs, and increasing the minimum liability as well.  This legislation may be expanded as it advances to encompass other clean up language for the Private Security Services Act we are studying.

CALSAGA will also be sponsoring legislation – still unnumbered as this is sent to you – to allow PPOs the option of registering firearms in their company name rather than in their individual officers’ names.

We are also looking to ensure there is greater recognition of the important work that private security officers perform in California.  Our friend, Assemblyman Ted Gaines (R-Roseville), is considering authoring an Assembly Joint Resolution that will recognize a California Security Officer Day in California.  Look for more information from CALSAGA soon, but we are excited about the possibilities of using a day like this to recognize our officers for the work they do everyday to protect the public.

We’ve also recruited the initial members of our newly formed Speakers Bureau. The CALSAGA members will represent CALSAGA and the security industry, speaking to local community groups and clubs.  They will help to educate other businesses and associations about our organization and industry.

Finally, the CALSAGA Board of Directors has moved forward with a plan discussed at our strategic planning session to expand the CALSAGA team by hiring a full-time Membership Coordinator. This Coordinator will be responsible for ensuring current members know all the benefits of their membership, and for recruiting new members.  This team member will be working in the field, not from the office in Sacramento, so he or she may stop by your office sometime to check in.  We’re in the hiring process now and will let you know when this new Coordinator is on board.

Like I said, it’s already been a busy 2010! I look forward to seeing everyone at one of the seminars in March.  Thank you again for your continued support of CALSAGA and our industry.  You’re involvement is making a difference!

Best,

flint
