With just a few weeks to go in the 2008 legislative session, CALSAGA continues to lobby aggressively for reform of the on-duty meal period rules for the security industry. Despite the ongoing commotion between legislators on how to solve the State’s budgetary woes, CALSAGA is pressing forward attempting to make progress in negotiating a deal. A lot more work needs to be done over the course of the next few weeks and we are hopeful that a deal is within reach. If needed, CALSAGA may ask members to contact their legislators directly, in an effort to urge them to support a deal. There will be more on this in the days that follow, so please stay tuned and prepare to engage when alerted. This grassroots effort is absolutely critical in the process and we’ll need the entire support of our membership. In other legislative news, Assembly Bill 2716 authored by Assemblywoman Fiona Ma (D – San Francisco) failed to get the necessary votes in the Senate Appropriations Committee. AB 2716 would have made California the first state to require mandatory paid sick leave for all full and part time workers for illnesses involving themselves or their spouse, parent, domestic partner or child. CALSAGA took a formal oppose position on the bill, citing concerns that the one-size-fits-all mandate on employers, especially smaller employers was overly burdensome and impractical in an already sluggish economy. Assemblywoman Ma has promised to re-introduce the legislation again next year, so we will continue to monitor any new developments moving forward. |
