On Wednesday, May 12, the BSIS Advisory Committee held a public meeting at the Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) to discuss recent changes at BSIS and to get an update from each industry the Bureau regulates. Advisory Committee Chair Jim Diaz introduced new BSIS Chief Jeffrey Mason, who discussed various improvements BSIS was implementing including directing all monetary transactions to DCA to create greater efficiency and decrease processing time of licensing and enhanced website and greater communication through email and social networking sites. BSIS Deputy Chief Connie Trujillo updated the committee on efforts to reign in unlicensed activity through the Unlicensed Activity Action Unit. Douglass Hamilton, Deputy District Attorney of Sacramento County, discussed the types of cases that their agency investigates and prosecutes. Hamilton said that generally speaking, there wasn’t a huge influx of cases involving private security companies or security officers. CALSAGA President Roy Rahn briefed committee members on our industry and discussed our strategic goals for 2010. Rahn explained that CALSAGA recently launched its Speakers Bureau, aimed at educating the public, elected officials and other related industries about the private security industry and that CALSAGA was in the process of hiring a full-time membership coordinator. Rahn also discussed legislative priorities and our Annual Conference. The Advisory Committee plans to meet once more in November.
