Update on SB 666 Advisory Committee

SB 666 Advisory Committee holds second meeting

On Wednesday, June 11, the BSIS Advisory Committee on Senate Bill 666 held their second meeting to develop training curriculum for proprietary security officers at the Department of Consumer Affairs.  As you may recall, the committee originally met on April 9 where substantial progress was made.  A sub-committee met in the middle of May to continue to flesh out ideas, in an effort to put forth an agreeable training curriculum for all.

Robert Smith, Chair of the Advisory Committee and President & CEO of Nightclub Security Consultants, presented to the group a working document that would mandate a sixteen hour training regimen for all proprietary security officers.  Chief Paul Johnson asked the committee to strongly consider adding a four hour course on weapons of mass destruction (WMD), similar to the requirement already on contract security officers.

Following considerable discussion, the committee agreed on the sixteen hour training standard and placed the weight on BSIS to determine whether or not to add WMD training.  Click the links provided below to download the proposed training:

While we are generally pleased with the recommendation from the committee, we are anxious to see what the final version will look like once BSIS staff and their legislative unit has had an opportunity to review and add their own recommendations.  Keep in mind, AB 2880 started out on a similar path in its inception, so we are cautiously optimistic that this is the beginning of a solid training program that every proprietary employer and officer can adhere to.

We will keep you posted on any new developments as information becomes available.
