CALSAGA participates in BSIS Chief’s Advisory Committee meeting

On Wednesday, February 7 in Riverside, Bureau of Security & Investigative Services (BSIS) held a meeting of the Chief's Advisory Committee, where representatives from private security, alarm and locksmith companies, repossessor agencies and private investigators discussed the challenges and obstacles facing their industries.

BSIS Chief Paul Johnson opened the hearing by giving several updates, specifically mentioning that SB 194 had been implemented in September 2006 and that roughly 4,000 Proprietary Security Officers (PSOs) are now registered with BSIS.

Additionally, Johnson reiterated that the Bureau is out in the field enforcing AB 2880 compliance with PPO companies throughout California and that they hope to complete 300 inspections by the end of February.  Johnson also mentioned that BSIS is using these visits as an opportunity to get to know each company and answer any questions or concerns they might have.

In other developments, one of the goals for BSIS in 2007 is to expand their outreach to the security industry and throughout the law enforcement community.  BSIS Outreach Coordinator Rolando Taeza has already made significant progress in educating various groups of the role of BSIS, but much more is planned to be done with trade association groups, as well as district attorney offices.

CALSAGA President Mark Miller represented the Association at the meeting and gave the committee a brief update on the activities of CALSAGA.  Miller also pointed out that while there is much more work to be done in the security industry, California should be proud that we are the model that other states look to when it comes to enforcement, training and laws and regulations.

Chief Paul Johnson wrapped up the meeting and stated that he wanted to do at least two more advisory committee hearings in 2007 and that the location would continue to move around the State so that everyone would have equal opportunity.

CALSAGA values are working relationship with BSIS and looks forward to participating in future advisory hearings.
