CALSAGA legislative leadership converges on State Capitol On Wednesday, March 5, CALSAGA legislative leadership and staff spent the day meeting with key legislators and staff on some of the more important issues facing the security industry, including meal and rest break reform, our reciprocity bill (Senate Bill 1209) and follow up legislation to Senate Bill 666. Perhaps equally as important to our legislative goals, the Legislative Day was another opportunity for CALSAGA to meet with face-to-face with elected officials who make decisions that have a direct impact on our industry. Additionally, many of the meetings were with legislators that had previously supported SB 666, so it was an opportunity to thank them for their support. On the meal and rest break front, nearly every legislator and/or member of their staff understood the seriousness of the issue and vowed to work with our industry on a solution. Several bills have already been introduced this year, including a bill from the larger employer community (SB 1539), as well as legislation sponsored by individual industries. While CALSAGA has not introduced its own legislation on this issue, we believe Assemblyman Lloyd Levine (D – Van Nuys) has a two-year bill, Assembly Bill 1711, that could provide our industry relief if and when a deal is brokered. The bill is currently sitting in the Senate Labor and Industrial Relations Committee from the last legislative session. As mentioned, CALSAGA also discussed Senate Bill 1209, which would permit security officers from out-of-state to perform certain security functions in California during a State of Emergency, as well as establish a specific contingency plan for our industry. Click here to read an article on our website from February 21 to get more information. We also explained that we would likely introduce follow up legislation to SB 666 from last year, once BSIS finishes putting forth a recommended training regimen for proprietary security officers. BSIS has already formed an advisory committee and has until June 1. Overall, the day was a success and we received many positive remarks about CALSAGA and our lobbyist from legislators and their staff. We will continue to keep you posted on any developments pertaining to our industry and our legislation as the session unfolds. |
